David Peterson had cruised through seven innings, holding the Tampa Bay Rays scoreless while the Mets built a 2-0 lead on Friday. With Peterson at just 83 pitches and the bottom of the Rays' order due up in the bottom of the eighth, Manager Luis Rojas sent the lefty back out to the mound.
