Signups for a federal program that cuts the cost of internet service for some low-income households are now underway. The Federal Communication Commission has launched the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program with signups starting yesterday. Eligible households can now enroll in the program to receive a $50-a-month discount off the cost of broadband service from an eligible provider. The program also provides a one-time discount of up to $100 off the cost of a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet from participating providers if the applicant contributes more than $10 and less than $50 toward the purchase price.
